Pyramid Day

Me and my fresh roommate Melanie went to the Pyramids in Sakkara and Giza. She had already been to Giza but wanted to enter one of them, however the latter turned out to be an awful experience...

Sakkara

The Globestrutter in front of the Sakkara pyramid wearing his retired Miami tourist sunglasses.

Another pyramid or the tourist junk yard? :-P

Me and Melanie resting our behinds on ancient history. :-)

How did these people fit into their tombs???

Horus checking us out from the tomb..

It's amazing that some paint is still left after many thousands of years. That's some real quality work if you ask me, maybe Snöhätta should talk to these guys. :-)

It was so much more comfortable inside, away from all the heat, sand flies and baksheesh hungry camel drivers.

Giza

Mr. Sphinx and Mr. Pyramid

The Sphinx is disappointingly small in real life, though his feet are huge. :-)

In Arabic the Sphinx is called Abu al-Hol, which means something like Father of Terror or Father of Greatness, depending on who you ask. But he doesn't look so dangerous without his nose.

The Cheops pyramid, professionally guarded by Egypt's version of the Mounted Police.

A rarely seen side of the Sphinx. The Giza plateau is nowadays actually just a patch of desert which has been completely surrounded by the vast extents of Cairo.

Taking a rest from all the damn tourists...

One would have thought the pyramids were higher... I mean, come on, they're supposed to be one of the wonders of the world!!

Climbing into one of the pyramids was the biggest disappointment so far. Imagine 50 degrees Celsius and the collected humidity of several hundred years of sweaty tourists and you'll get the idea. And this shitty dark tomb was the only thing inside. And it was expensive too. My recommendation: DON'T DO IT!!!

The leaning tower of Giza?? :-)

Resting and drying my soaked t-shirt after the inside-of-the-pyramid experience.

Pyramid base, camel taxi and Cairo in the background... The end of a great day!
